Galah magazine: Romanticising rural Australia

Only few pages into Galah Issue 02. I already know I should have ironed the uniforms, put dinner on and folded the washing first.

Like the first issue, I could not put down this magazine until I had read it inside out.

Galah celebrates regional and rural Australia. No other magazine feels this close to home. Editor-in-chief Annabelle Hickson’s second issue is centred around the domestic.

Turning to the first chapter, I already recognise the images by photographer Clancy Paine. Clancy captures everyday moments near her home at Narromine, NSW. If you didn’t already romanticise your backyard, the hills hoist, the spiders in the outside laundry, the dust … you will after seeing Clancy’s photos.

Galah tells stories of people who could well be your neighbour, your sister or the store down the road. You see glimpses of your own crooked dining room and the quirky pieces of art you have collected or created. It rejoices in the extraordinarily-ordinariness of what could easily be your home or your town.

Galah has all the feels. It’s your grandmother cutting up apricots for jam, it’s the sand on the floor from your holidays at Minnie Water Beach, it’s the ‘treasure hunt’ for peculiar rusty metal things around the old sheds with your kids.

For anyone who, like us, is experiencing a mouse plague, this magazine is a little break from the monotony of domestic life and scent of rodents.
