A family in Condamine, following their incredible loss, turned to help others

Zara’s Day was the initiative of Kate and Justin Boschammer whose daughter Zara was born with the extremely rare Pallister Killian Syndrome (PKS).

 

In honour of her almost 7 months of life, the Boshammer family in 2021 raised more than $150,000 for the Steve Waugh Foundation and the Queensland Royal Flying Doctor Service.

 

The Steve Waugh Foundation helps families of children who are affected by rare diseases. The Royal Flying Doctor Service provides vital connection to health care and a retrieval service to regional, rural and remote Queenslanders.

 

Auction and raffle items were donated including accommodation, vouchers, clothing, photography shoots, even an overnight bag by the Saddler & Co workshop. Eleven artists, including Jenie Fawckner, Amanda Brooks, Helen May, Camelia Grace Art and Leigh Suzie Art donated artworks to help raise funds for Zara's Day.

 

Living and working as a nurse in North Western NSW, Leigh appreciates the importance the Royal Flying Doctor Services, the Steve Waugh Foundation and getting access to specialist medical care in country areas.

 

“Zara’s incredible story hit home for me, as a mum and as a nurse,” Leigh said.

 

“I had an idea to incorporate Lilac into a landscape for Zara. To find out that was her favourite colour was really special.”
